What happens if a vow to fast covers portions of Ramadan and portions of another month?

If a vow coincides partly with Ramadan and partly with another month, such as Sha'ban or Shawwal, the person must fast the portion that falls outside of Ramadan and complete the remainder from Ramadan's obligations.
