Primary text

The statement "one-third suffices you" is evidence that the speaker uttered words implying obligation, as this phrasing is typically used for mandatory matters. Furthermore, preventing the individual from giving more than one-third suggests that giving beyond that amount is not considered an act of closeness to Allah (Qurbah), as the Prophet, peace be upon him, would not prevent his companions from acts of closeness.

Supporting text

It is argued that the instruction given to Abu Lubabah was not about a vow but about a general intention to give away all wealth, similar to the instruction given to Sa'd regarding his will. However, the response asserts that the phrasing used implies an obligation inherent in the vow, and the restriction on giving more proves it is not an obligatory act of piety.
