Primary text

The obligation for the vowed walking or riding in Hajj or Umrah continues until the pilgrim exits the state of Ihram (tahallul). This is because the conclusion of Hajj or Umrah is marked by this exit.

Supporting text

Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal stated that riding is permitted after the stoning ritual (ramy) in Hajj, and after the ritual running (sa'i) in Umrah, because subsequent intercourse would not invalidate the Hajj or Umrah performed up to that point, indicating that only the first exit from Ihram (tahallul al-awwal) is the relevant benchmark.
