What is the ruling on fulfilling a vow (Nadhr) to fast consecutive months if the fasting begins in the middle of a lunar month?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Vows
Primary text
If one begins consecutive fasting months from the beginning of a lunar month, the fulfillment is counted by the appearance of the new moons (Ahillah), and this is without scholarly disagreement. If the fasting begins in the middle of a month, that initial month is completed by counting the days, and the remaining full months are counted by the lunar cycle. This view is held by Malik, Shafi'i, and one narration from Abu Hanifa.
Supporting text
The other narration attributed to Abu Hanifa, and related from Ahmad, states that all months must be completed by counting the days (the number of days in the month), not by the lunar cycle.
