From where must the vowed act (walking or riding) in Hajj or Umrah commence?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Vows
Primary text
The vowed act, whether walking or riding, must commence from the person's residence (dawirat ahlihi) unless a specific place was intended in the vow, in which case the obligation begins from that specified location. This is because the vow is interpreted according to its established basis in the obligatory Sharia, and the originally obligatory Hajj is performed in this manner. The prohibitions associated with the vowed act are the same as those associated with the originally obligatory act.

Some Shafi'is hold that the Ihram must be entered from the resident's home because completing the Hajj follows this principle. However, the dominant view is that the unspecified vow refers to the customary practice in the Sharia, and the obligatory Ihram begins from the Miqat (designated boundary point). The obligation of walking or riding continues until the first stage of exiting Ihram (tahallul al-awwal).
