Is a divorced woman permitted to remarry her former husband during her waiting period (Iddah)?

Book of Waiting Periods ('Iddah)
Primary text
It is permissible for a man to remarry his wife immediately after Khul' (dissolution by wife's compensation) or the nullification of their marriage, even during her Iddah period. This is the position held by the majority of jurists, including Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib, 'Ata, Tawus, al-Zuhri, al-Hasan, Qatadah, Malik, al-Shafi'i, and the People of Opinion (Ahl al-Ra'y). The evidence supports this because the purpose of the Iddah is the preservation of lineage and semen. When the contract of a valid marriage is established, the woman becomes his wife ('farash' or 'bed') and she cannot simultaneously be his wife and be in her Iddah, thus terminating the initial waiting period.

A minority of later scholars held that remarriage or even proposal is forbidden during the Iddah following Khul' or annulment because she is still observing the waiting period.
