Is it permissible for a wife to remarry if her husband is absent but his situation is known and he communicates?

The wife of a man whose absence is not absolute, meaning his news is known and his letters are received, is absolutely forbidden from remarrying according to the consensus of scholars. However, if it becomes impossible to provide maintenance (Nafaqa) for her from his wealth, she has the right to seek the dissolution (Faskh) of the marriage, which shall then be decreed.
