What is the prescribed waiting period for a female slave (*amah*) divorced with a revocable divorce (*talaq raj'i*) if she is freed before her *iddah* ends?

Primary text
If a female slave is divorced with a revocable divorce and is freed before her *iddah* is complete, the *iddah* of a free woman is completed upon it. This position is held by Al-Hasan, Al-Sha'bi, Al-Dahhak, Ishaq, and the Ashab Al-Ra'y (Hanafi school), and is one of the opinions of Al-Shafi'i.

If the divorce is irrevocable (*talaq ba'in*) and she is freed, she observes the *iddah* of a female slave. This is the second opinion of Al-Shafi'i and the view of Malik and Abu Thawr, based on the principle that since freedom occurred after the *iddah* became obligatory, its ruling is not considered, similar to if she were already in an irrevocable divorce, or if it occurred after the obligation of establishing purity (*istibra'*). Conversely, it is argued by 'Ata', Al-Zuhri, Qatadah, and a third opinion of Al-Shafi'i that she completes the *iddah* of a free woman in all cases, as the complete cause for the *iddah* of a free woman, if found during the period, causes transition to it, as happens if she menstruates during a monthly calculation period. Specifically, if she is revocably divorced, freedom causes transition to the waiting period of a widow. If she is irrevocably divorced, freedom did not exist during the marriage, so the *iddah* of a free woman is not obligatory, unlike if she were freed after the monthly cycles concluded.
