What is the required number of periods (hayd) for *istibra'* when an enslaved woman is shared by two partners who have intercourse with her?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Waiting Periods ('Iddah)
Primary text
Two separate *istibra'* periods are required for the woman. This is because the fulfillment of her status (right to be free of pregnancy) is sought for two individuals, and these two rights do not merge, similar to the waiting periods (*iddah*) for two separate marriages. Furthermore, since the *istibra'* is sought from two separate men, it resembles two separate *iddah* periods.
Supporting text
One scholar among the companions of Al-Shafi'i holds that a single *istibra'* period suffices because the sole purpose is ascertaining the purity of the womb, which is known after one menstrual cycle.
