Primary text

If the heirs volunteer to house the widow in her deceased husband's residence, the residence of a third party, or a stranger's dwelling, she is obligated to observe her waiting period (Iddah) there. If she is prevented from staying there or if the heirs demand rent from her, she has the right to move to another dwelling, similar to a tenant whose lease expires and the landlord demands the property back. This right to move holds whether she can afford rent or not, as her obligation is only to observe the Iddah, not to procure the dwelling itself.

Supporting text

If the heirs move her out of the husband's residence and offer her another dwelling, she is not obligated to accept the offered alternative. Similarly, if she is removed from her current dwelling or leaves for any reason, she is not obligated to reside in any specific place other than her original home, regardless of whether the heirs or others offer an alternative. This applies even if she is entitled to residence (Sukunah), but residing in her own home becomes impossible, and an alternative is offered.
