What is the ruling if a wife, traveling with her husband's permission for a non-migration purpose, is widowed during her journey?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Waiting Periods ('Iddah)
Primary text
The ruling is analogous to that established for a wife traveling for Hajj. If she reaches her destination, she must remain there until she completes the purpose for which she left, such as trade or other needs. If her departure was for recreation or a visit, or if no specific duration was set, she observes the traveler's prescribed period of three days. If a duration was set, she remains for that duration, as her travel was valid by his permission. Upon the expiration of the term or completion of the need, if she cannot return due to fear or other valid reasons, she completes her waiting period (*iddah*) in her current location. If she can return but cannot reach her marital home before the *iddah* ends, she must remain where she is, as observing the *iddah* while a resident is preferable to observing it while traveling.
Supporting text
If she can return and still has time remaining in her *iddah*, she is obligated to return to observe the remainder in her marital home.
