Primary text

The creation of images is forbidden for the one who makes them. The prohibition is established by the saying of the Prophet (peace be upon him), reported by Ibn Umar, stating that those who make these images will be severely punished on the Day of Resurrection, being commanded to bring to life what they created. Furthermore, a narration from Masruq quotes Abdullah (Ibn Mas'ud) who, upon seeing a statue of Maryam (Mary), recounted the Prophet's statement that the people facing the severest punishment on the Day of Resurrection are the image makers. This ruling (prohibition) is agreed upon (Muttafaqun 'alayhima). The command to perform the creation of images is equally forbidden as the act of creation itself.
