Primary text
When a man marries a woman who is fit for conjugal relations, the husband is obligated to take possession of her upon demanding it, even if she offers herself to him. Upon this obligation, her maintenance (*nafaqah*) also becomes obligatory. If the husband demands possession and the wife requests a delay, she must be granted a respite for a period customary for her to prepare herself, such as two or three days. This is because such a delay is minor, and custom dictates it. The ruling is supported by the Prophet's saying: 'Do not approach women at night until the disheveled woman has combed her hair and the absent wife has groomed herself.' This prohibition against immediate nocturnal approach mandates granting a delay for preparation, even when intimacy has already been established; therefore, granting a delay here is more appropriate.
