Is it permissible to eat food without washing hands after relieving oneself?

It is permissible to eat immediately after relieving oneself without washing hands with water. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) partook of dates with his Companions after coming down from a mountain pass and having attended to his needs, without touching water.
