Is it permissible to perform one major ablution (*Ghusl*) after intercourse with multiple wives or concubines in one night?

Primary text
It is permissible to combine the ritual bath (*ghusl*) for multiple wives and female slaves with one single ablution. Anas narrated that he poured one *ghusl* for the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, from among his wives in one night. If major ritual impurity occurs, it does not prevent further intercourse, as evidenced by the completion of the initial act.

Imam Ahmad stated that if a man intends to return to intercourse, performing *Wudu* (minor ablution) is preferable. If he does not perform *Wudu*, it is hoped there is no issue. This preference is because *Wudu* increases energy and cleanliness. Washing between each act of intercourse is better; Abu Rafi narrated that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, went around to all his wives and performed a separate *ghusl* for each one. When asked why he did not make it one single *ghusl*, he replied: 'This is purer, more fragrant, and cleaner.' Furthermore, a narration from Abu Sa'eed states that if a man has intercourse at the beginning of the night and wishes to return, he should perform *Wudu* like the *Wudu* for prayer.
