Primary text
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, entered the Kaaba and saw an image of Abraham and Ishmael casting lots with arrows, upon which he cursed them for attributing that practice to them, despite their certainty that it never occurred. This is narrated by Abu Dawud. Furthermore, Abdullah entered a house containing statues, and within the conditions set by 'Umar (RA) for the People of the Book (Ahl al-Dhimmah), they were required to keep the doors of their churches and synagogues wide so that Muslims could stay overnight or pass through with their animals. When 'Umar (RA) came to Al-Sham, Christians prepared food and invited him to their church. He declined to go, sending Ali (RA) to eat with the people. Ali (RA) entered the church, ate with the Muslims, and observed the images, stating that the Commander of the Faithful could have entered and eaten. This demonstrates a consensus among them on the permissibility of entering places containing images.
