Primary text

This verse (Quran 2:228) means that each spouse must fulfill the rights incumbent upon them towards the other in a fair manner, without delay or showing aversion. This fulfillment must be done with cheerfulness and good disposition, and without subsequent harm or claiming a favor. This interpretation is supported by the command in Quran 4:19 to 'live with them in kindness' (wa 'ashiruhunna bil ma'ruf). Furthermore, it is recommended for each spouse to cultivate excellent character, gentleness, and forbearance towards the other's mistreatment, drawing support from Quran 4:36, which commands kindness to relatives and 'the companion at your side' (al-sahib bil janb), which is interpreted to include each spouse.

Supporting text

Abu Zayd stated that this means both parties must fear Allah concerning the other, just as the wife must fear Allah concerning the husband. Ibn Abbas expressed a desire to adorn himself for his wife just as he wishes her to adorn herself for him, citing Quran 2:228. Al-Dahhak interpreted this as: if the wives obey Allah and their husbands, the husband must maintain good companionship, refrain from harming her, and provide for her according to his means.
