How should one choose between two simultaneous invitees when neither responded first?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of the Wedding Feast
Primary text
If the two invitations are received simultaneously, the one whose door is closest must be answered first. This preference is based on a narration from Abu Dawud, citing the Prophet, peace be upon him, that one should answer the one closest in terms of 'bāb' (door/gate). Furthermore, a narration from Al-Bukhari quotes Aisha saying that when asked to whom she should gift, the Prophet instructed her to choose the one whose door was closest. This choice is prioritized as it pertains to acts of virtue and kindness.
Supporting text
If the proximity of the doors is equal, the relative with the closest kinship bond should be answered first, due to the importance of maintaining kinship ties. If the kinship ties are also equal, the most pious of the two should be answered. If all these factors are equal, a drawing of lots (qur'ah) must be performed to determine the recipient, as lots establish the right when claims are equal.
