What is the required duration and limitations for dividing time among free wives?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of the Wedding Feast
Primary text
A man must divide time among his free wives on a night-by-night basis. Any desire to exceed this requires their consent. The preferred division is one night for one wife and one night for another because this is closest to established precedent, and it fulfills the obligation of equality. Division beyond one night, such as two or three nights consecutively, is only permissible with their consent. Three nights are permitted because they are considered minimal, similar to a single night. Exceeding three nights is impermissible without consent because it involves delaying the rights of some wives unnecessarily, similar to delaying payment of a due debt, and extensive delay, such as giving three nights to four wives resulting in nine nights before the last one receives her turn, leads to detriments associated with delay.

Al-Qadi stated that it is permissible to divide time two nights for two nights, or three for three, but exceeding that requires their consent. The preferred view remains one night for one night based on the Prophet's practice.
