Primary text

One must eat from the food immediately in front of them, which is nearest to them. This is supported by the instruction given to 'Umar ibn Abi Salamah to 'eat from what is nearest to you.' In another instance concerning a dish of Tharid (bread soaked in broth) and fat, the Prophet, peace be upon him, instructed 'Akraash to 'eat from one place, for it is one food.'

Supporting text

When food consists of different colors or varieties, such as a platter of dates, one is permitted to eat from wherever they wish, as the Prophet, peace be upon him, permitted 'Akraash to eat from where he pleased because the food was not of one color.
