Primary text
Extravagance in household adornment, such as covering walls unnecessarily, is disliked (makruh). This is because it constitutes a form of excess, similar to excessive expenditure on clothing or food. This is supported by the report where Abdullah bin Yazid Al-Khatmi wept upon seeing a decorated house, referencing the Prophet's words concerning the world's luxuries, asking if his companions were better off now that they covered their houses as the Kaaba was covered.
