Is scattering nuts or sweets (like almonds or sugar) among present attendees at a feast considered good practice?

Primary text
If the distributor scatters items such as almonds or sugar among those present, there is no disagreement that this is good and not disliked. Evidence for the general permissibility of distributing food comes from the report that the Prophet (PBUH) distributed dates, giving each person seven, including one poor date that was most cherished by the recipient. Furthermore, if the distributor places items before them and permits them to take it without scrambling, it is not disliked.
Supporting text
Ahmad preferred that items like nuts be divided and given rather than scattered. One narration shows that when Ahmad's son reached the age of comprehension, Ahmad distributed walnuts to the boys individually, five to each, rather than scattering them.
