Primary text

Sexual intercourse with the wife in the anus is not permissible, according to the opinion of the majority of the people of knowledge. This view is held by Ali, Abdullah, Abu Ad-Darda, Ibn Abbas, Abdullah bin Amr, Abu Hurairah, Sa'id bin al-Musayyib, Abu Bakr bin Abd al-Rahman, Mujahid, Ikrimah, Al-Shafi'i, the people of *Ra'y* (Hanifis), and Ibn al-Mundhir. The evidence for prohibition includes the hadith reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah is not shy about the truth; do not approach women from their backs (in the anus)." Furthermore, it is reported from Abu Hurairah and Ibn Abbas that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Allah will not look at a man who has intercourse with a woman in her anus." Another hadith from Ibn Mas'ud states: "The anal passages of women are forbidden to you." A further hadith from Abu Hurairah states: "Whoever approaches a menstruating woman, or a woman in her anus, or a soothsayer and believes what he says, has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad." These hadiths were narrated by Al-Athram, with some related by Ibn Majah.

Supporting text

The permissibility of intercourse in the anus is narrated from Ibn Umar, Zayd bin Aslam, Nafi', and Malik. It is reported from Malik that he stated: "I have not encountered anyone whom I follow in my religion who considers it lawful (halal)." The people of Iraq among Malik's companions deny that Malik permitted it. Those who permitted it referenced the Quranic verses: "Your wives are a tilth for you, so go to your tilth as you wish" (Quran 2:223), and "And they who guard their private parts, except from their wives or those whom their right hands possess" (Quran 23:5-6). However, the interpretation supporting prohibition clarifies that the permission granted in the verse {nisa'ukum harth lakum} (Quran 2:223) means approaching the sexual organ (al-harth) either from the front or the back, provided the intercourse occurs in the proper place (the vagina). A narration specifies: "Approach her coming and going, provided that is in the vagina."
