The obligation to accept the invitation applies only when the invitation is specific (ta'yeen), meaning a particular man or a defined group of people is invited individually. If the invitation is general ('Jafala'), such as saying, "O people, come to the feast," or if the messenger is instructed to invite whomever he meets, the obligation to accept does not apply, nor is it recommended. This is because the individual was not specifically designated, and thus the obligation is not fixed upon him, nor is the host's heart likely to be broken by the non-attendance, as it was not a specific designation. However, accepting an invitation delivered generally is permissible as it falls under the general scope of the directive to respond.
