How is retaliation applied for an injury extending beyond the corresponding limb?
Chapter on Retaliation (Qawad)
Al-Mughni
Book of Wounds
Primary text
If a physical injury (*jinayah*) occurs on a limb other than the head or face, such as the forearm (*sa'id*), and the extent of the injury surpasses the length of the corresponding limb on the perpetrator, retaliation (*qisas*) is confined strictly to the original site of injury. If the injury is on the forearm, retaliation does not extend down to the hand (*kaff*) nor up to the upper arm (*'\u1e0dad*). Similarly, if the injury is on the lower leg (*saq*), retaliation does not extend down to the foot (*qadam*) nor up to the thigh (*fakhidh*). This is because the parts above and below the original site constitute a different limb structure, from which no retaliation can be executed.
