Primary text

No retribution (qisas) is due for the hand cut while the individual was a slave; half of its value, or the diminution in value caused by the cutting, is owed to the former master. Retribution is due for the leg cut while the individual was free, or half the blood money (diyah) is due to his heirs if retribution is pardoned.
