What is the ruling if a person with two ears severs one ear of an already one-eared person?

If an individual with two ears severs one ear of a person who already has only one ear, retaliation (Qisas) is mandatory upon the perpetrator without any known difference of opinion, neither within our Madhhab nor outside it. This is because the utility of each ear is independent and not contingent upon the other ear.
