Eligibility of Banu Hashim for mandatory charity (Zakat)
Chapter on Zakat on Sheep
Al-Mughni
Book of Zakat
Primary text
It is established that mandatory charity (Zakat) is impermissible for Banu Hashim. The Prophet (peace be upon him) stated, "Indeed, charity is not appropriate for the family of Muhammad; it is merely the impurities of the people." Furthermore, the Prophet commanded his grandson Al-Hasan to discard a date he took from the Zakat, affirming that they do not consume charity. This ruling is supported by consensus.

Some scholars maintain that it is permissible for Banu Hashim to receive Zakat because they are not related to the Prophet (in the specific manner prohibiting Zakat) and they are not compensated via the one-fifth share (*khums*), as they are not recipients of it.
