Primary text

The Nisab for silver is established as two hundred Dirhams, and there is no disagreement among the Islamic scholars regarding this amount. This is confirmed by the previously mentioned Sunnah. The Dirhams considered for this Nisab are the Islamic Dirhams, where ten of them weigh seven Mithqals, and each Dirham is one-fifth of a Mithqal. These Dirhams were standardized during the Umayyad era to equate two types previously in circulation (black and Tabariyah) into two equal Dirhams, each containing six Duwaniq. This standardization was established so that ten pieces weigh seven mithqals, it achieved fairness between the small and large former units, and it corresponded with the Prophet's (PBUH) established measure for religious criteria. There is no distinction made between bullion (Tibbr) and minted coins (Madrub) concerning this standard.
