Primary text

The estimation (kharṣ) of Zakat applies specifically to date palms and grapevines based on established tradition (*athar*). This practice is mandated to allow the owners latitude (*tawsi'ah*) to consume the fruits when fresh (while still moist) and to manage them before the final Zakat payment is rendered on the estimated amount. Furthermore, the fruit of vines and palms is visible and collected, making estimation easier than with other crops. This view is supported by 'Ata', al-Zuhri, and Malik.
