The foundation for legal rulings rests upon the Book (Quran) and the Sunnah (Prophetic tradition). The Quranic evidence includes the command to spend from the good of one's earnings and produce (Quran 2:267), and the linking of Zakat to spending through verses like Quran 9:34. Furthermore, the command to render the right upon harvest (Quran 6:141) is interpreted by Ibn Abbas to mean the obligatory Zakat or the due of one-tenth or one-twentieth.
