Must gold and silver be combined to fulfill the Nisab for Zakat?

There are two narrations concerning combining gold and silver, which were previously mentioned. The preferred opinion, supported by Abu Bakr, is that neither metal should be combined with the other, despite his choosing to combine grains. This distinction is made because gold and silver have differing Nisabs, whereas the Nisabs for grains are agreed upon.
