Is it permissible to adorn a man's sword with silver?
Chapter on Zakat on Gold and Silver
Al-Mughni
Book of Zakat
Primary text
Adorning a sword's hilt (*qab'ah*) or the sword itself with silver is permissible. Anas reported that the hilt of the Messenger of Allah's sword was silver, and it is also narrated that Al-Zubayr's sword was adorned with silver. This ruling extends by analogy to adorning a man's belt, helmet, greaves, and straps with silver, as these are customary adornments for men, unlike a collar, which is not customary.
Supporting text
A view expressing dislike (*karaha*) for adorning the belt with silver was transmitted, attributing it to being a source of pride and ostentation, similar to a collar. However, the opinion allowing it is preferred because the belt is customary for men.
