Primary text

It is impermissible to give defective grain, such as that which is worm-eaten (*masus*) or damp (*mablul*), or grain whose taste has changed due to age. This is based on the saying of Allah the Almighty: {And do not select the defective for expenditure therefrom when you would not take it except by closing your eyes to it} (Quran 2:267). However, if the old grain has not changed in taste, but the newer grain is more valuable, it is permissible to give the old grain because there is no defect in it. Nevertheless, giving the superior quality is preferable.

Imam Ahmad preferred the practice of Ibn Sirin, who favored purifying the food given, as this is more desirable for completeness and to avoid admixture with other substances. If there is an admixture that takes up a measurable portion of the measure, and it is substantial enough to be considered a defect, it is not sufficient. If the admixture is not substantial, it is permissible provided that what is given exceeds the measure of the defect such that the amount given constitutes a full Sa' (measure).
