Is it permissible to prepay Zakat on crops and fruits before their harvest readiness?
Chapter on Zakat on Sheep
Al-Mughni
Book of Zakat
Primary text
The apparent position, based on the statement regarding Zakat related to two causes (Hawl/fulfilling a year and Nisab/minimum threshold), is that prepayment of Zakat is not permissible if the obligation is tied to only one cause, which is the fruition or ripening of the crops and fruits. Prepaying Zakat before the fruition is invalid because it precedes the existence of its cause. However, prepayment is permissible after the fruition, even before the fruit dries or the grain is filtered, according to Abu Al-Khattab. The emergence of the initial bloom (Tala') or unripe grapes (Hasram) and the sprouting of the crop are considered equivalent to establishing the Nisab, and the fruition is equivalent to the completion of the Hawl, which permits prepayment. The obligation of Zakat al-Fitr is established upon the sighting of the crescent of Shawwal, which is the time of obligation, establishing that a single prerequisite does not prevent prepayment.

The text implies a difference of opinion where the apparent view of Al-Qadi suggests that prepayment is only valid when Zakat is dependent on two causes (fulfilling the year and reaching the threshold), thus precluding prepayment when Zakat is dependent only on the fruition of the crop.
