Primary text

There are two opinions regarding paying Zakat with an item dissimilar to the owned property when the owner possesses none of the property type being used for payment. The first view states it is sufficient because the payment is from the species of property (referring generally to Zakat assets), analogous to a case where the wealth consists of two types, and payment is made from one type covering both. The second view states it is not sufficient because the payment is from a type not owned, resembling payment from a different genus, differing from the case where payment is made from one of two types owned, which is permitted to avoid fractionalization of the obligatory amount. The Lawgiver permitted payment from a non-genus for a small number of camels or for the compensatory sheep in certain cases, which contrasts with the current issue.
