Is the *Jadh'a* of sheep acceptable for Zakat when the requirement is one year old?
Chapter on Zakat on Sheep

Book of Zakat
Primary text
The *Jadh'a* of sheep is acceptable for Zakat. This is evidenced by the report of Sa'd ibn Duleym where the collector accepted either a *Jadh'a* female goat or a *Thani*. Furthermore, a narration received by Malik from Suwayd ibn Ghuflah explicitly states that the collector was commanded to take the *Jadh'a* of sheep and the *Thani* of goats. This clarifies the absolute statements in preceding Hadith. Additionally, the *Jadh'a* of sheep suffices for the greater sacrifice (*Udhiyah*), unlike the *Jadh'a* of goats, as indicated by the Prophet's statement to Abu Burdah ibn al-Niyyar concerning the *Jadh'a* goat that it suffices for him but not for anyone after him. The reason cited for accepting the sheep's *Jadh'a* is that it is capable of breeding, whereas goats only breed when they are *Thani*.

Shafi'i argues that by analogy, the *Jadh'a* of sheep should be permissible alongside the *Thani* requirement, based on the explicit textual proof.
