What is the liability when one party pays their Zakat sequentially before the other party pays?

If one individual pays their Zakat before the other, there is no liability resting upon the individual who paid first, provided they were unaware that the second party had not yet paid. However, liability for the second party's unpaid share rests upon the second party themselves, not the first.
