What is the linguistic meaning of Zakah (Alms)?

Zakah linguistically signifies purification, growth, and increase, deriving from the root meaning that it causes wealth to flourish and increase. It is said that a crop has become 'zakā' when its yield is abundant, and that spending ('nfaqah) is 'zakāt' when it is blessed.
