What is the minimum taxable amount (Nisab) for rice if stored with its husk?
Chapter on Zakat on Crops and Fruits
Al-Mughni
Book of Zakat
Primary text
Abu Al-Khattab stated that the Nisab for rice with its husk is ten Wusūq because it is stored in that state. If it were removed from the husk, it would not remain stored as long as it does with the husk, thus making it equivalent to *al-'ulas* (a type of grain stored with chaff) concerning the established ruling. The obligation of Zakat is established on ten Wusūq when the rice is in its husk.
Supporting text
Others state that the Nisab is not considered based on the amount with the husk unless trustworthy experts confirm that the yield reduces by half, making it comparable to *al-'ulas*. If trustworthy experts are unavailable or doubt arises regarding its reaching the Nisab, the owner is given the choice: either pay Zakat on the husked amount or purify it to ascertain the net amount. If the purified amount reaches the Nisab, Zakat is taken; otherwise, it is not taken, as certainty is only achieved this way, treating it like adulterated currency.
