Is the offering of Sault (a type of barley) permissible as Zakat al-Fitr?
Chapter on Zakat al-Fitr
Al-Mughni
Book of Zakat
Primary text
The offering of Sault is permissible for Zakat al-Fitr because it falls under what has been explicitly stipulated. This is supported by narrations detailing the practice during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). Ibn Umar narrated that people used to give Zakat al-Fitr during the era of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) as a Sa' of barley, or a Sa' of dried milk curds (aqit), or a Sa' of Sault. Abu Sa'id narrated that during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), they only gave a Sa' of dates, or a Sa' of barley, or a Sa' of raisins, or a Sa' of fine flour (daqiq), or a Sa' of dried milk curds (aqit), or a Sa' of Sault. These narrations were recorded by Al-Nasa'i.

Sufyan later expressed doubt regarding the inclusion of fine flour (daqiq) or Sault in his narration of Abu Sa'id's hadith.
