If part of the fruit perishes after assessment (kharas), what is the ruling regarding the remaining portion?

Chapter on Zakat on Crops and Fruits

Primary text

If some of the fruit perishes and the remaining portion meets the *nisab* (minimum threshold for Zakat), Zakat is due on the remainder. If the remainder does not meet the *nisab*, no Zakat is due. This view aligns with the opinion that Zakat is not obligatory until the day of harvest, as the fulfillment of the *nisab* is a condition for obligation.

Those who hold that the obligation is established upon the beginning of ripeness or the hardening of the grain follow a different ruling by analogy. If the loss occurred before the obligation became due, the ruling follows the first opinion (no Zakat unless the remainder meets the *nisab*). If the loss occurred after the obligation became due, Zakat is due on the remaining portion proportional to what was lost, regardless of whether the remainder constitutes the *nisab* or not, similar to when part of a *nisab* of livestock perishes after Zakat has become due.
