What is the preferred quality of charity (sadaqah)?

The best charity is that which is given from surplus wealth beyond one's own necessities and the necessities of those one is perpetually responsible for supporting. This is based on the Prophet's saying: "The best charity is what is given from surplus wealth, and begin with those you support," which is agreed upon (Muttafaq 'alayh).
