What is the prescribed measure for Sadaqat al-Fitr?
Chapter on Zakat al-Fitr
Al-Mughni
Book of Zakat
Primary text
The obligatory amount for Sadaqat al-Fitr upon every person is one Sa' of foodstuff, and less than that is insufficient from any category of outgoing material. This view is held by Malik, Shafi'i, Ishaq, and is narrated from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, Al-Hasan, and Abu al-'Aliyah. Supporting evidence includes the narration from Ibn Umar that the Prophet, peace be upon him, mandated one Sa' of dates or barley, and people subsequently adjusted the amount to half a Sa' of wheat. Furthermore, for any category of foodstuff used for Sadaqat al-Fitr, the measure should be one Sa', consistent with other categories.

There is a narraton from 'Uthman ibn 'Affan, Ibn al-Zubayr, and Mu'awiyah, as well as the view of Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab, 'Ata', Tawus, Mujahid, 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz, 'Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, Abu Salamah ibn 'Abd al-Rahman, Sa'id ibn Jubayr, and the Companions of Opinion (Ahl al-Ra'y), that half a Sa' of wheat specifically suffices. The narration concerning the ruling is varied for 'Ali, Ibn 'Abbas, and Al-Sha'bi, with reports indicating either one Sa' or half a Sa'. There are two narrations from Abu Hanifa regarding raisins: one states one Sa', and the other states half a Sa'.
