What is the ruling on changing the intention for livestock from trade (*tijarah*) to personal use/grazing (*isama*) during the hawl (one lunar year)?
Chapter on Zakat on Trade Merchandise
Al-Mughni
Book of Zakat
Primary text
If livestock intended for trade is possessed for half a hawl, and the intention is then changed to personal use (*isama*), the hawl for trade ceases, and a new hawl must be commenced for the grazing livestock. This is the position held by Al-Thawri, Abu Thawr, and the companions of Al-Ra'y. The evidence cited is that the intention for trade was interrupted by the intention for ownership/possession, and the hawl for grazing cannot be built upon the hawl for trade. Furthermore, it is established that if the livestock was designated for grazing from the beginning of the hawl, Zakat becomes obligatory upon completion of that hawl. This view is narrated concerning Ishaq.
