What is the ruling regarding Zakat calculation for 'Al-'Ulus' (a type of wheat kept in its husk)?
Chapter on Zakat on Crops and Fruits
Al-Mughni
Book of Zakat
Primary text
Zakat is obligatory on Al-'Ulus when it reaches ten Wasqs while still in its husk, requiring the payment of one-tenth (Ashr), as this amount is considered equivalent to five Wasqs of cleaned wheat. If there is doubt whether the Al-'Ulus reaches the minimum taxable amount (Nisab) while in the husk, its owner has the option to either pay Zakat based on its quantity in the husk or pay Zakat after shelling it and estimating its value as five Wasqs. This ruling applies analogously to mixed gold and silver if doubt exists regarding whether the pure metal reaches the Nisab.
Supporting text
The practice of estimating Zakat for other types of wheat while they are still in their husks, or removing Zakat before they are fully cleaned, is impermissible because there is no necessity to keep them unhusked, custom does not support it, and the exact yield from the husk cannot be known.
