The scope and application of the verse regarding giving the due upon harvest (Quran 6:141)
Chapter on Zakat on Crops and Fruits
Al-Mughni
Book of Zakat
Primary text
The ruling that the due must be given on the day of harvest (Quran 6:141) applies to olives, supporting the obligation of Ushr, based on its inclusion alongside olives and pomegranates, and the reason that its yield can be stored. Mujahid stated that when grain is harvested, a portion is given from the spikes, and when palms are pruned, a portion is given from the fronds.
Supporting text
Al-Nakha'i and Abu Ja'far hold that this verse is abrogated, arguing that it only applies to that which can be harvested, pointing to the mention of pomegranates immediately following it, on which no Zakat is due.
