Primary text

There are two narrations attributed to Ahmad regarding items subject to Zakat. The first narration states that Zakat is only due on the four specified items (presumably wheat, barley, dates, and raisins, based on context). The second narration states that Zakat is obligatory on wheat, barley, dates, raisins, corn (dhurah), selt, rice, lentils, and every item that stands in their place, provided it can be stored and measured by the Qafiz, such as cowpeas (lubiya), chickpeas, sesame seeds, and pulses (qutniyyat). Zakat is due on these items.

Abu Al-Khattab derived an opinion concerning safflower and wurs (a type of dye plant), drawing an analogy (qiyas) to saffron. However, the first view mentioned is preferred as the alternative view contradicts Ahmad's foundational principles, especially since items like saffron and cotton do not fit the measurement system (Qafiz) or the meaning of what was specifically mentioned by the Prophet.
