Is the use of gold permitted for medical necessity in men?
Chapter on Zakat on Gold and Silver
Al-Mughni
Book of Zakat
Primary text
Gold is permissible only when necessity dictates it, such as for a nose replacement for one whose nose has been severed. This is evidenced by the report of 'Arfajah ibn As'ad, whose nose was cut off, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded him to use a gold nose replacement after the silver one caused a foul odor. Imam Ahmad permitted the use of gold to tie loose teeth when there is a fear of them falling out, as this practice was observed among the people under necessity. Several companions and Successors reportedly used gold to secure their teeth.
Supporting text
A second narration reported from Ahmad suggests prohibition concerning the use of gold. This prohibition is supported by a hadith warning severe consequence for one who adorns himself with a small gold piece called a *khuraysisah* (like a grain).
