Primary text

Ibn Aqil holds that the criterion for the measure of the Nisab is also the value. Thus, if one possesses jewelry weighing nineteen units but valued at twenty due to its workmanship, Zakat is due.

Supporting text

The apparent view of Imam Ahmad favors considering the weight, consistent with his explicit statement based on the Hadith: 'There is no Sadaqah on less than five Ounces,' and because it is wealth whose essence is subject to Zakat, the value added by striking currency should not be considered. Similarly, value added by fine craftsmanship should not be considered, just as added value from a precious gem is not considered for Zakat purposes.
